Ribs 6, 7 & 8

Post by tlandrum »

I have all of ribs 2-5, 9, and 10 complete, but I have a few questions on 6-8

Rib 6 I have down... just don't put the gussets on the back, just use the 3/32" dubbers, on both sides.

Rib 7 and 8 are the ones that really confuse me. Looking at the plans it talked about the wider spar holes for the doublers... no problem, I made some jigs, and made a couple of ribs with them... but I went back to look at the plans again... and it looks like the "Rib 7" with the larger spar holes, and with the pattern in the plans... is actually only rib 7 on the bottom ribs... it is Rib 8 on the top ribs?!?!

So is the Rib 7 only correctly named on the bottom wing... but on the top wing you should switch the rib 7 and 8? I hope that makes sense. Am I correct on this?

I never noticed that but you are right, the doubler plates are in different places on the top and bottom wings so the ribs are in different locations. On the top wing ribs 7 + 9 are the same and 8 has the wider spar opening. On the bottom wing ribs 8 + 9 are the same and 7 has the bigger cutout. As for making the ribs there is no difference between the top and bottom wing ribs with the exception of the first rib. You will end up making the same number of each rib. The first rib for the top wing is not shown on the plans anywhere that I could find, I ended up tracing a full sized rib. If you make all the ribs first, as I did then, remember to install the ribs before you install the doubler plates.
I have a lot of pictures on my site that show the rib relationship.

Hope that helps

Thank you... I have looked at the plans several times and just wanted to make sure I was right in that one. Thanks
