Introduction and starting my questions

Post by lynnRC »

Hello everyone I joined awhile back and have been mostly reading through the vast amounts of info available. A little about where I'm at with the project.... I took over a parts collection for the classic last year. The fuselage was factory built early on and is pretty good. found a few errors that I'm correcting, but its not bad. The plans are from 2002, when you could get kits. Anyway, the original guys had collected a lot of parts, but not really started on the build. They pretty much got tired of spending money with no progress, and it set all these years in the back of the hangar. Having restored a couple of certified planes, they figured if it was going to ever be completed, I was the guy. Short of the long, I was given the project for FREE. Fast forward to now and It is coming together nicely. The wings "all 4" are now built and currently mounted on the fuselage for fitment. Flying wires are in place for fitment and the tail section is on. I'm currently at the final full mockup on these items before removal to cover. A few small things to address, such as landing lights and wiring. I have the toe brake pedals welded and getting ready to weld the master cyl mounting bar in place. Not going with heel brakes....The insterment panel has been fully templated out and ready for final router work. This has been a lot of work and long long hours getting to this point. Couple of quick questions to start with. Oh and the planed engine is the Verner S9 Radial from Scalebirds.

1: Saw on here that someone was making the upper turtle deck from fiberglass and selling. I followed the link and it was a dead end. Is this guy still making these for sale? If so, any contact info would be appreciated. Honestly, I would rather buy it if available to save time.

2: I have the Baja lights like used on the RV builds and need some advice on mounting brackets/clear covers. The airfoil is slightly different on the RVs but I think the lens can be slightly modified. I'm planning on a single light each bottom wing between a rib and false rib. I have routered out reinforcement pieces to the rib ends, but still haven't made the skin leading edge cuts yet. My question is: Is there a preferred mounting kit/lens kit/combo that is preferred for the Clark Y airfoil?

This should be enough questions to start. Thank you

Ok no replies on this one so assuming the fiberglass turtle deck is no longer available. Update, Landing lights are from Baja designs and I found a blank install kit for the rv6 AT Duckworksae.com..... Using the space between a rib and false rib, I am able to insert 2 support false rib pieces to add strength and cut the one install bracket from kit, to make both light mounts. With a little heat, the lens bends well to fit the Clark Y shape. It has to be cut down about 1.5" to fit, but it rides perfect on the support ribs i made. P.S. if you plan on adding nav lights, you can 3D print a mount to epoxy on the wingtip top wings It works out very clean. If I ever figure out how to upload pics on here, ill do so on some of these items

I made a fiberglass headcomb. Still have the mold if you're interested in using it to make your own. See process here: http://myhatz.blogspot.com/2022/02/2022 ... -comb.html

I left a flat spot on the bow for the NAV/Strobe light but it wasn't a big enough area. I added some wood to the bow and reshaped it so the light fit. I added a lot of wood but cut most of it away. There is just a slight bulge in the bow to fit the light.

One of the problems is getting the wiring for the lights down the cabanes. I think I'm going to add some 3/8" aluminum tubing to match the fuel lines and run the wiring down it. I seen that on other builds.

yes I'm very interested in the mold. Thinking about the wiring issue, i like the idea of making a false fuel line to hide the wires. I just added that in my plans notes......

Building the honey comb up on the bow is how i started to make my nav light mount. A friend happened to come by to see how the project was going and when he saw what i was working on. he offered to 3D print mounts. being the lazy guy I am, i jumped on this to save some time. I was very impressed with the fit on the first attempt.

Ok now that pic upload was explained, i'll grab a few pics and get them uploaded.

That was my plan, 3/8 tubing held to the struts with Adel clamps. I bought the tubing, wires, connectors, everything, but sold the plane. Still have all the parts including the lights and wires for sale if anybody's interested.

Lynn,
I ran my wires through some plastic air line so if needed they could be removed. The air line is mounted to the ribs but the wires are loose inside. I ran them down the cabane strut in some aluminum tubing. picture attached. Covers for the fuel lines were 3D printed.

I am planning to make a fiberglass head comb as well. Murry, I may take you up on the offer of having you mold one for me. Will save me the time to make the mold. The pictures in your blog look just about like what I was planning. So if Lynn also wants one, it would be worth your trouble to get out the mold and fire up the vacuum bagging set up.

Lynn,

Welcome to the forum. I'm glad to see there is a bit more activity here lately - I had almost given up on it.

Folks like Ed and Murray have a lot to offer us builders as we plough through ground they have already covered, so I hope it stays active. Thanks everybody!

Steve and Lynn. I missed your posts. And sure, I can make up a couple headcombs. I'll work out a cost and get back.
