Rib 6....aileron

The plans clearly state to not apply three gussets on the outboard section (trailing area) of the aileron bay rib; #6. What about the other side?

I did not apply any of the regular gussets on the trailing area of rib 6 (aft of the rear spar). I installed the 3/32 doubler on the inboard side and am holding off on the outboard side until I get around to assembling the wings (hopefully this year). If you look closely you'll see that the outboard 3/32 doubler needs to incorporate the trailing edge which you can't do until you build the wing.

I built mine with gussets on one side and then sanded them off when I realized my mistake.

It appears all 4 ribs get a large 3/32" piece on the inboard section aft of the rear spar. The top wings are similar on the outboard side except for a space for the aileron spar (or do you butt that spar against the 3/32" stiffener). It seems the bottom wings get the stiffener from the aileron spar and beyond (outboard section), so you'd still have gussets #2 and #3 at the spar location (on the outboard section).

I'm stuck though...

I have not figured out how to attach the trailing edge piece to rib #6. So, I think I'll leave these pieces off for now. I can shape them and glue them onto the rib once the rib is on the spar and I have the trailing edge piece made.

John,
I didn't exactly follow the plans when it came to the tail piece but I am very happy the way it came out and it is very strong.
I routed 1/8 inch slots for gussets and a 1/4 inch slot at rib #6 for the aileron brace.

I also cut slots with a dado into the tail piece for the ribs to fit into. I glued it using pieces of 1/4 plywood clamped to the bottom side of the ribs to keep it all straight.

When it came time to install the aileron brace it fit perfectly into the 1/4 inch slot that I had made earlier.

If you follow this link I think you can see it pretty good.

Thanks John,
It looks like my site is down and the links don't work. I will fix it when I get home from work.

Scott, Thank you very much, you just made my day. I have been following your work closely and have "stolen" more than a few of your ideas, you are indeed an excellent craftsman.
