Shopping list
Hi all,
Just got my plans (#136) and trying to figure out the first wood order.
Interested to know how others have determined the bill of materials, say for the ribs?
Thanks,
Amit.

Re: Shopping list
Hi Amit,
I am also getting ready for my 1st wood order. What I have come up with is 500ft of 1/4sq spruce(46" minimum lengths for 80pcs). (1)1/16"x4'x8' ply for gussets. (1) 1/4"x4'x8' ply for nose blocks. I am confident the 1/16" ply qty is good and 80% confident in the spruce qty. I am not very confident in the 1/4" ply qty. I think this will give me enough to build the full ribs but more will be needed for the center section and possibly the end ribs. I may just order 2 full sheets to assure I get all the ply needed for the wings. 1-1/2 sheets may be enough but the center section takes a large piece just for the bottom.
This is one area where I have struggled to find an accurate list of what is really needed. I will try to make a good material list for the wings when I am finished.
Sorry I can't be of more help!!

Thanks Anthony, that helps.

Re: Shopping list
I ended up ordering 510 feet 1/4 sq spruce. I have more than 10 feet left over, but not much.
1/16 Mahogany? I think you are overkilling. (2)1/16"x2'x4' ply for gussets did all of the ribs for me. Later, I rebuilt the #1 rib for the top wing and skinned it with 1/16 Mahogany, which required me to order another 2'x4' sheet.
1/4 Ply? I started with a 4 x 8 sheet and still have quite a bit left over.
I also bought locally a 4 x 8 sheet of MDF. I used it for router templates and various other needs. Amazing stuff.
T-88 epoxy was also purchased locally.
Remember, it is not an airplane, but a journey. Hope this helps.

Re: Shopping list
Still researching, one is cheaper on spruce and the other cheaper on the ply. I will have to see how it works out with shipping. I am also waiting to see if my buddy is going to build as well, we are meeting to discuss this during lunch this week.orchardair wrote:Thanks Anthony, that helps.

Re: Shopping list
TulBiplane,
I am curious as to what you were able to build with that amount of wood? Did you take in account sheeting the end rib at the aielron bay as well? Also did you have enough to build the top wing center section? What I am looking for is to order all the ply necessary to build the wings not just the ribs. So that would be the spar doubler plates, supports/reinforcements etc: The shipping is expensive on the ply so I want to make sure I get it all ordered at the same time.
Thanks!!

Re: Shopping list
Sorry for the misunderstanding. Orchardair was asking about build ribs. The information that I provide was enough (for me) to build 40 ribs, period. No center section, wing walk, false nose ribs, leading edges, spar doublers, etc. Also keep in mind that material list will vary from builder to builder, as each decides on their material of choice. Example: Hans and Sam are building a beautiful Hatz in Europe, but their material lists includes Okume (spelling?) wood, for their leading edge, that apparently is available locally.

True, how efficient a person is at laying out parts on plywood and how much waste material they generate also figures into the calculation.TulBiplane wrote:... Also keep in mind that material list will vary from builder to builder...

Re: Shopping list
Yes you are correct I misunderstood his needs for mine
I am trying to wrap my head around what wood I want to order as well. I am thinking of ordering all the wood needed for the wings except the spars and order them when I am ready to assemble the wings.
Later!!

Re: Shopping list
So Doug,
Did you keep the order you made to your wood supplier for the entire project? what was your shopping list like?
