I've been buying hides from these guys. They'll send you a sample first so you can make sure it's the right weight and color.

I cut strips from a piece of leather from an old automotive seat.

Micheal,
I used a simulated leather from the local fabric store. They said it was commonly used for boat cushions. It was inexpensive and light weight, and I can stand on the combing without hurting it.
